Overview

The Solid Mechanics department of Electric Boat is recognized among the Navy Community for its structural analysis expertise, and its ability to enact innovative and practical solutions to the most challenging problems. Engineers in the Applied Mechanics group develop and maintain state-of-the-art, production-level software to simulate the response of structural and mechanical systems to a wide range of loading scenarios. The group performs research and development of cutting-edge computational engineering analysis methods, and adapts and incorporates these methods into existing or new software applications. Most of these engineering analysis methods and software products are based on the finite element method and associated pre- and post-processing methods. Of particular importance is the simulation of fluid-structure interaction in the time and frequency domains to evaluate the dynamic behavior of submerged structures. Methods currently used to simulate fluid-structure interaction include the boundary element method, infinite element and mesh-free methods, and Eulerian methods.

Engineers work in a team environment, mentored by highly experienced engineers, to develop and enhance the computational engineering analysis software described above. Responsibilities include research of new methods; software development, testing, and maintenance; documentation; and interaction and consultation with end users.

Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows some work to be performed remotely and at home. This varies from position to position based on the amount of classified material the department interacts with, as well as a few other variables.
